How to turn on Bluetooth on your Google Stadia controller

Google Stadia may be gone, but there's still time to breathe new life into your Stadia Controller. Here's how to enable Bluetooth mode on the official Stadia controller.

Google Stadia, the cloud service that was determined to take over the console gaming market, is no more. Despite its intriguing set of features, including the ability to pick up where you left off on any Stadia-enabled device, whether it's a phone, TV, or laptop, Stadia just couldn't scale to the masses.

Google officially retired Stadia on January 18, 2023, and while users were refunded for all digital purchases made on the service, you might be wondering where that leaves the physical Stadia controller? Luckily for all Stadia users, Google has released a patch that lets you use the Stadia Controller over Bluetooth. Be aware, however, the patch is only available until December 31, 2023so if you want to enable Bluetooth on your Stadia Controller before the cutoff point, here are the steps you need to follow.

What you will need:

  • A Stadia controller
  • A USB-C cable
  • A laptop/PC

The short version:

  1. Go to Stadia's Bluetooth mode website and click "Switch to Bluetooth mode".
  2. Click "Start" to switch to Bluetooth mode
  3. Plug in your Stadia Controller
  4. Click on “Allow Chrome to verify”
  5. Select “Stadia Controller rev. A' then click on 'Connect'
  6. Follow the on-screen steps
  7. Click on “Allow Chrome to download”
  8. Select 'SP Blank RT Family' then click 'Connect'
  9. Click on "Allow Chrome to install"
  10. Select 'USB COMPOSITE DEVICE' then click on 'Connect'
  11. Bluetooth is now enabled on your Stadia Controller

    Go to Stadia's Bluetooth mode website and click "Switch to Bluetooth mode".

    Click "Start" to switch to Bluetooth mode

    On the left side, you will see a box labeled "Switch to Bluetooth mode". Click the "Start" button in this box.

    Plug in your Stadia Controller

    Use a USB-C cable to plug your Stadia Controller into your PC or laptop, then click "Continue."

    Click on “Allow Chrome to verify”

    To proceed to the next step, click the "Allow Chrome to verify" button in the center of the page. This will open a pop-up window at the top of your browser.

    Select “Stadia Controller rev. A' then click on 'Connect'

    In the pop-up window that just appeared, select “Stadia Controller rev. A' then click 'Connect' to continue.

    Follow the on-screen steps

    For this section, you'll need to unplug your Stadia Controller, then press and hold the "three dots" button while you plug it back in. With the "three dots" button pressed, press the Google Assistant, Y and A buttons at the same time.

    Click on “Allow Chrome to download”

    On the Download Bluetooth Mode Update page, click "Allow Chrome to download" in the center of your screen. When you do, another popup will appear.

    Select 'SP Blank RT Family' then click 'Connect'

    In this second pop-up window, select “SP Blank RT Family” from the list before clicking “Connect”.

    Click on "Allow Chrome to install"

    Once the download is complete, click "Allow Chrome to install" in the next step. A third and final pop-up will appear.

    Select 'USB COMPOSITE DEVICE' then click on 'Connect'

    On this final pop-up screen, select 'USB COMPOSITE DEVICE' then click 'Connect' to complete the process.

    Bluetooth is now enabled on your Stadia Controller

    You are now free to connect your Stadia Controller to compatible Bluetooth devices.

How do I connect my Stadia Controller to Bluetooth devices?

Press and hold the Stadia and Y buttons at the same time to enter Bluetooth pairing mode on your Stadia Controller.

What do the blinking lights on the Stadia Controller mean?

When flashing orange, the Stadia Controller is in pairing mode. A flashing white light means the controller is connecting to its last paired device, while a solid white light means the controller is connected to a device.
