AMD unveils RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT graphics cards with RDNA 3 design

AMD has announced the next-generation RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT graphics cards. The new flagship GPUs are the first to be built on the RDNA 3 architecture.

At a launch event on Thursday, the company confirmed the new Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs, which will go hand in hand with the new Nvidia RTX 4000 series.

The new chips will offer a 54% increase in performance per watt over GPUs based on RDNA 3 chips. This looks like a significant leap forward for the lineup.

Radeon RX 7900 XTX is the top dog, with AMD touting 24GB of memory, compared to the RX 20 XT's 7900GB of memory. They will both launch on December 13 and will cost $999 and $899 respectively. We'll bring you the UK prices when we have them.

At the event, the company said the RX 7900 XTX is 1,7 times faster than the existing flagship, the RX 6950 XT, when gamers are enjoying the action at 4K resolution. There are efficiency gains too, with 350 watts of on-board power. Those concerned about power consumption may prefer AMD's option to the Nvidia RTX 4090, which was announced in September and comes in at 450 watts.

At the launch event, the company revealed that the RDNA 3 architecture is capable of delivering 61 teraflops of power, which is a massive increase from the 23 TFLOPs that RDNA 2-powered GPUs were capable of.

This new architecture also brings big changes in the operation of the GPU. The 7000 series now has a chip design similar to the Ryzen line of processors also offered by the company. Essentially, the tasks were assigned to different cores. There is a 5nm portion for graphics, while 6nm technology handles all memory-based elements. AMD claims to be the first company to use the technology in a GPU.

The chips also bring improvements to popular ray-tracing technology, which allows game developers to showcase advanced lighting options like realistic shadows. There's a 50% performance improvement over the previous generation and 1,5 more spokes.

The physical design of the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT is similar, and retaining an 8-pin connector means you should just be able to plug it into your existing rig without any hassle or extra cables.

We'll have tons of extra content on the morning release, including detailed comparisons between the previous generation chips and how they compare to the latest and greatest from Nvidia. Keep it locked to Trusted Reviews.
