Do you share a Netflix account? Prepare to pay for it

“Paid sharing” could be rolled out by March.

Netflix and money

Netflix is about to get serious in its efforts to weed out profiteers. If you share a Netflix account with family or friends outside of your household, be prepared to pay for it. A new "paid sharing" system could be rolled out from next month, and you'll have to pay a fee for those who use your account.

Announced as part of its fourth quarter 2022 earnings report this week, password sharing could die as early as March. In the report, Netflix confirmed that its new paid sharing feature will be rolling out in the first quarter of 2023. For those unaware, this quarter ends in March. This means the company is ready to drop the ban hammer on these sharing accounts.

Over the past year, Netflix has made several changes. The company introduced new ad-supported plans to boost revenue, confirmed it was about to crack down on password sharing, and even created a profile transfer tool.

Netflix said, “While our Terms of Service limit the use of Netflix to one household, we recognize that this is a change for members who share their account more widely. As we roll out Paid Sharing, members in many countries will also have the option to pay extra if they want to share Netflix with people they don't live with.

The company recently made it easier to disconnect users, such as an ex, parents, siblings, friends, or extended family, which will likely play a big part in this change. You can manage your account and remotely disconnect anyone accessing the account.

And while we're not sure exactly how the paid sharing feature will work, anyone outside of your household using the account will likely get a pop-up and be unable to stream movies and shows. And if you want to add an additional profile to your Netflix account, it will cost you.

In a test outside the US last year, Netflix charged an additional $2,99 per month for "secondary accounts". These additional users have their own profile, password, recommendations and monitoring history. Still, we'll have to wait and see.

If you're sharing Netflix with a group of people, tell them to enjoy it while they can. Or you can fire them up and suggest signing up for the new $7 per month ad-supported plan.
