The Google patent for links

Google has filed a patent to automatically assess the "value" of a link for Internet users. Here are 4 tips for making the most of it.

It hardly seems believable but Google has filed a patent for the automatic analysis and classification of HTML links, based on human data.

These were collected en masse from all users who agreed to install the "Google toolbar" in their browser. This is what the newsletter Axandra, in June 2010.

To take advantage of this system, here are the tips to apply as soon as possible to internal (on your site) and external (to your site) links:

  • Place links in featured content and not in secondary parts like menus, footer and site map.
  • In the link title, place keywords both related to your content and strategic for your site. Anything that looks like "manipulation" devalues the value of the link.
  • Avoid any commercial word in the title of a link like "Buy now", "Take advantage of the promo", etc. They don't qualify the content they point to and devalue the strength of the link.
  • Your links will be more valuable if the keywords in their title are consistent with those of the page on which they appear. Example: if you sell flowers, a link to your content coming from a page related to this semantic theme will be better taken into account by Google. If it comes from a site other than yours, it will be considered a vote for your site.

If this patent was officially filed in May 2010, Google laid the foundation 2004 soon. The engine has undoubtedly been using these methods for several years.

Tremplin Numérique has integrated these good practices for all links designed and written for its clients.
