Sony reminds us that it makes electric vehicles and that its latest concept is fire

Forget about smartphones, cameras and the PlayStation 5. Sony will build electric vehicles next. In 2020, Sony surprised more than one by teasing the EV Vision-S concept, showing how serious electric cars are. Then, at CES 2022, the company took it up a notch and announced Sony Mobility.

Sony Mobility is the new automotive division of the company, and to remind us that they make electric vehicles, Sony just released their gorgeous new Vision-S 02 concept SUV. And honestly, that looks pretty good.

The Vision-S 02 prototype combines many of Sony's imaging and sensor technologies, developments in AI, telecommunications, and more, to create an electric vehicle that could soon rival Tesla. Just like the model presented two years ago, the Vision-S 02 SUV contains more than 30 sensors for autonomous driving, a complete infotainment setup with three screens across the entire front dashboard, screens in the rear , a panoramic glass roof and several other interesting features.

And while Sony hasn't shared a ton of specs, we have a few details along with the images and teaser video below.

Before thinking that this is just a concept like the 2020 sedan, Sony actually started testing the original Vision-S on European roads last year. So basically the company is pretty serious about electric vehicles, and this latest SUV concept may soon become a reality.

The overall size and shape looks a lot like Tesla's Model Y, but things could change if that goes into production.

During the announcement, Sony said the new Vision-S 02 SUV works with two electric motors capable of a combined output of 536 horsepower. Unfortunately, we did not get any information on battery size, charge speeds, or estimated runtime. However, the original 2020 sedan reportedly went from 0 to 62 MPH in 4,8 seconds, with a top speed of 149 MPH, with two similar electric motors.

Concluding, Sony CEO said, “We are exploring a commercial launch of Sony's electric vehicle and how a creative entertainment company can redefine mobility. "

At this point, anyone can guess whether or not we'll be able to drive or own a Sony EV one day, but things are certainly moving in that direction.
