Samsung commits to "integrate" foldables

It has been clear for some time that Samsung plans to unveil the Galaxy z fold 3 et Z flip 3 to its next Galaxy Unpacked event on August 11, but now the company has revealed that its ultimate goal is to make folding devices popular.

Towards the end of a long press release announcing a 20% increase in profits to 63,67 trillion won (~ $ 55,56 billion) with operating profit of 12,57 trillion won (~ 11 billion), the company laid out its plans for the future.

“With the successful launch of the new foldable smartphones offering an even better user experience, the company will consolidate its leadership in the premium segment by integrating the foldable category while continuing the sales momentum of the Galaxy S series throughout the year. year. "

There are, so far, two things that have kept foldables from becoming mainstream: reliability and price.

The former has been tackled quite effectively since the original Galaxy Fold, which broke in the hands of critics. The second generation Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip 5G have not been the subject of any widespread reports of breakage and are widely considered to be extremely well designed.

Price remains an issue, however. At launch, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 sold for £ 1799 and the Z Flip 5G for £ 1300. This makes both more expensive than a 12GB Apple iPhone 256 Pro Max, which sells for £ 1199.

If Samsung is serious about its mainstream ambition, then this is the area to target, and reports suggest the company will offer a 20% price cut this time around. It's still pending, with some corroborating the claim, but other price leaks suggest it's a bit of a stretch.

Samsung seems confident, however, with a source indicating that the company aims to manufacture 7 million foldables this year - a big increase from the 1 to 2 million previous foldables produced. That would suggest something to boost sales, whether it's a big price drop or other incentives to push upgrades, like free extras or generous trade-in discounts.

We'll find out for sure on August 11, when the company is also expected to launch the Galaxy Buds 2, Galaxy S21 FE, and two types of Galaxy Watch 4.
