Apple Reportedly Offered Clarity After iOS 14 Security Updates Vanished

Apple reportedly said the iOS 14 security updates were only a temporary measure for those who didn't want to upgrade to iOS 15 immediately.

Reports last week highlighted that the iPhone maker no longer offers iOS 14 users access to the latest security updates, alongside those running the latest versions of iOS 15.

The updates previously gave iPhone users the ability to stick with the software they liked to use, avoid any iOS 15 boot issues, and still eliminate all security holes.

Now, according to Ars Technica, Apple said this was only meant to be a temporary measure. The report doesn't contain quotes from an Apple representative, but says the measure was a "short grace period while Apple ironed out the worst of the new operating system's early bugs."

It certainly didn't seem to be the case at the time. When Apple released iOS 15, the company's features page didn't say anything about it being a temporary measure.

He said: "iOS now offers a choice of two software update versions in the Settings app. You can update to the latest version of iOS 15 as soon as it's released to get the latest features and the most comprehensive set of security updates. Or continue on iOS 14 and still get important security updates until you're ready to upgrade to the next major version.

This is still listed, but the text now says "may offer" rather than "offer now". So what has changed? Well, maybe that's the news that also surfaced last week. It seems that a good number of iPhone users have accepted Apple's offer.

The company released its iOS 15 install numbers for the first time last week, with 72% of iPhones in the past four years running iOS 15. That's down from 81% of phones running the latest version in December. 2020.
