Mercedes-Benz's new EV concept puts all other automakers to shame

Mercedes-Benz unveiled its Vision EQXX concept vehicle during a virtual presentation at CES 2022, and yes, this thing lives up to the hype. Not only does the EQXX offer an obscene 648 miles of range, it's the most efficient electric vehicle ever: it can go over 60 miles (about 100kilometers) using only 10 kWh of energy.

For reference, 10 kWh of household electricity costs about $ 12 in most parts of the United States. That's about as much electricity as you would use to run an air conditioning unit for three hours. And if a fairy godmother would come down and turn the Vision EQXX into a heavy hitter of gasoline, it would have an insane fuel efficiency of 235 MPG.

Again, the EQXX gets its reach from its efficiency, not from an XXL double-charged battery. This means improved aerodynamics (a record coefficient of drag of 0,17), an advanced drivetrain developed with the help of F1 engineers, and a relatively lightweight construction (3 pounds). I should note that the EQXX has 858 solar cells on its roof, however, and its battery is much more energy dense (and therefore physically smaller) than other 117 kWh batteries.

Mercedes-Benz has also managed to give the EQXX a very strange futuristic interior. It has a 56-inch hyper-display that spans the full width of the dash, along with “leather” seats made from mushrooms and eco-friendly pull tabs instead of door handles.

But there are a few things to note about the Vision EQXX that aren't that exciting. For one thing, it's just a concept car, and it's unclear how much a production EQXX would cost - these super-efficient electric vehicles might not be accessible to ordinary people for a very long time. Additionally, the EQXX's 648 mile range is not confirmed by the EPA or any other independent party.

What if buyers want an EV with very long battery life? today, Mercedes is not necessarily the best option. The Mercedes-Benz EQS can go 350 miles on a charge, which is pretty good, but the Lucid Air and the Tesla Model S Long Range Plus can go between 400 and 500 miles. Additionally, Tesla plans to launch the Roadster in 2023, and it can go 620 miles on a charge, although I have a feeling that is going to be delayed.
